What a change of status to F-1 is

If you are in the U.S. lawfully — for example, as a B-1/B-2 visitor or as a dependent — and decide to study, you don't always have to go home for a student visa. You can file Form I-539 with USCIS, together with your school's Form I-20 and proof of financial support.

Once approved, USCIS issues an I-797 notice granting F-1 status with "D/S" (duration of status) for the length of your program.

  • Fastest: 49 days.
  • Longest: 224 days, about seven months.
  • Median: 91 days; average: 112 days.

In many cases the decision came in about three months, but in several the wait ran past six months.

Processing depends on the USCIS service center and its workload at the time of filing, so nobody can promise an exact date. The spread gives a realistic range: plan for two to seven months.

Why planning ahead matters

  • Program start date. You must file while your current status is valid, and the I-20 start date should fall after the expected decision. Schools can often defer the start if needed.
  • No full-time study before approval. Visitors may not enroll in a full course of study while the application is pending.
  • Travel. Leaving the U.S. while the I-539 is pending generally abandons the application.
  • Every case is individual. Your original purpose of entry, timing and finances are reviewed together.

We work out the right filing approach for your situation in a consultation.

How M&M helps

  1. An assessment before filing — whether a change of status inside the U.S. fits your history.
  2. A complete package — forms, financial documents, translations and a cover letter, in one team.
  3. Support until the decision — case tracking and help if USCIS asks for more evidence.
